The following tips can shave up to 50% off the cost of your drywall
crack repair, and in some cases even more!
The
majority of homes that I work on are part of subdivisions that in many
cases use the same stock paint on every home
they build. In these cases you can use the reference below to
locate the type of touch-up paint you will need to purchase.

I can include it in this list. |
Most paint stores will do a custom match for you at no
additional charge. To do this they will need a
sample of the color
they need to match. The ideal size of a sample is 3" x
3" or larger. In many
cases you can simply take a piece of
the drywall that is cracking out, but sometime getting a large enough
sample can be troublesome. In these cases simple take the piece of
drywall that is being used as a cover for
you attic crawl space (
usually found in upstairs hallways or closets ). If this is not available you can remove
the top layer of drywall paper from
above the door on the inside of a closet. Simply cut a square with
a razor
knife and peel off the top layer of paper. Either of these
two samples should work fine. The importance of
an exact paint
match varies with each job. If the repair is for one crack on a
small wall then an exact match
would be of less importance because I
could simply paint the entire wall. If the job involves the repair
of
several cracks throughout the home then an exact match would be more desirable
as to avoid the added work
of repainting several walls.
In many cases a builder will leave a touch-up kit in a
garage or laundry room cabinet. Other builders may
provide you with a book that actually lists: Carpet colors, tile colors, roofing
materials, and yes. . even
paint colors.
If you want to verify that a paint color is an exact
match simply dip the tip of a clean finger into the
touch-up paint and
apply a small portion to an area near the crack. Be sure to wait
until the sample is
completely dry before evaluating the color.
Remember that flat latex paint is darker when wet and
lightens as it
dries. The opposite is true for semi-gloss finishes.
Semi-gloss finishes appear lighter when
wet but tend to darken as the
paint dries.
